DAY CENTRE

Day centre located on the main street of Coober Pedy, we offer harm minimisation and harm reduction activities for men and women throughout the week including the Coober Pedy Mamaku Men’s group. Programs run throughout the week at our Drug and Alcohol Day Centre.

Opening hours 8.30am – 5.00pm Monday to Friday.

 

Activities include:

 

Ø  Art & Craft

o   The UTHSAC art and craft programs are to build social capital by boosting individuals ‘ability and motivation to be civically engaged, as well as building organizational capacity for effective action. This is specifically accomplished by creating a venue that draws people together who would otherwise not be engaged in constructive social activity, Fostering trust between participants and thereby increasing their generalized trust of others. Providing an experience of collective efficacy and civic engagement, which spurs participants to further collective action, Arts events may be a source of pride for residents (participants and nonparticipants alike) in their community, increasing their sense of connection to that community, Providing an experience for participants to learn technical and interpersonal skills important for collective organizing, Increasing the scope of individuals’ social networks.

Ø  Music group for Men

o   It is a powerful medium because it affects a wide range of human activities, including personal, social and cultural and entertainment pursuits. Youth/Elders are exposed to authentic music practices in which they learn to view the world from different perspectives, experiment with different ways of sharing ideas and feelings, gain confidence and self-esteem, and contribute to the social and cultural lives of their local community. The discipline and commitment of music-making provides opportunity for personal growth and the development of lifelong learning skills. It helps build Youth/Elders self-esteem, resilience and personal motivation, and allows them to refine time management and collaborative teamwork skills in activities.

Ø  Bush trips

o   UTHAC organises Men’s and Women’s Bush/Camping on various topics which includes drugs, alcohol, sniffing, smoking, sexual and mental health. These outings helps youth/elders to be safe from harmful activities and more into their cultural activities.

Ø  Gardening/Veggie patch program

o   UTHSAC garden provide fresh products and plants as well as contributing to a sense of community and connection to the environment and an opportunity for satisfying clients and neighbourhood improvement. Gardening improve users’ health through increased fresh vegetable consumption and providing a venue for exercise. Community gardens foster the development of a community identity and spirit. It brings people together from a wide variety of backgrounds (age, race, culture, social class) provides inter-generational exposure to cultural traditions. Gardening is a healthy, inexpensive activity for youth that can bring them closer to nature, and allow them to interact with each other in a socially meaningful and physically productive way.
